AU HISTORY: So once there was this Hungarian lady who was dating a foreigner. She was deeply in love with him, and ostensibly he was in love with her. Eventually however, he began to notice something very...off in the way she acted around him; particularly the bit where she was kind of (read: scarily) obsessed with him. Knowing the danger signs, he decided to break it off, though they were probably better ways of doing it than just suddenly running off, and she was left alone. She was also left pregnant with his child, though he hadn’t known that at the time.

Marcell is that child. Considering how his mother was described just now, you can expect this did not go well.

Growing up in Budapest, Marcell home life was a minefield for as long as he could remember. His mother, to all appearances a pleasant woman so long you didn’t examine her behaviour too closely, was actually a Stepford Smiler and frankly kind of unstable. She’d been a little…worrying for a long time, but after Marcell’s father left her, it only got worse. She seemed torn as to how she felt about her son – most of the time she tried to ignore him beyond caring for his basic needs for the sake keeping up appearances, sometimes she was a little pleased with him, other times she’d unleash her wrath upon him for something he’d done, blaming him as the reason his father had left them. When she was satisfied with him she occasionally gave him gifts, only to take them away or destroy them in the next moment of anger. Physical violence was extremely rare but an ever present threat, save for a couple separate incidents in which Marcell was fairly certain she had come close to deciding he was better off dead. She just changed her mind at the last moment, is all.

And Marcell still loved her and tried to please her anyway. He figured that he deserved whatever he got, since he did do things that made her angry, and she was his mom so she must be knowing what she was doing, right? Even after his mother narrowly stopped short of killing him twice, he still put his faith in her in some kind of desperate, misguided belief that if he made her truly happy they could finally be a real normal family, instead of just pretending to be one.

In school he was very quiet and introverted; he had difficulty making friends because he was afraid his mother wouldn’t approve of them, or they’d find out, and he really was that kind of quiet kid. Marcell was the kid who sat at the back of class, and didn’t say nor was spoken to much. Sometimes he played with his classmates, but he wasn’t particularly close to anybody. Eventually a teacher noticed he was becoming even more withdrawn, isolating himself almost entirely from the rest of the class, and so pulled him aside one day to ask some questions. Marcell lied, but nonetheless the teacher arranged to have a talk with his mother about it.

His mother assumed that Marcell had told the teacher about home however, and she was enraged that he had apparently broken the façade she was putting up. Even when he screamed for help, Marcell was backed into a corner and it looked like help would arrive too late --

-- except the neighbours arrived to find his mother apparently screeching and stabbing at the air, to no avail. Marcell had protected himself with a barrier at the last moment, and they quickly pulled her away and called the police. In the aftermath of the incident, Marcell was sent to live in an orphanage, but he didn't adjust well. He was jumpy and quiet, making it either difficult to talk to him (on the account that he would hide himself in his barrier frequently) or easy to bully.

Over the next two years the caretakers could see that Marcell was making very little progress in coping, so eventually they decided to call up the Xavier Institute of Higher Learning to arrange for his studies there, thinking it would be for the best if he learned how to control his powers and spent some time in an environment more accepting of mutants.
